An upcoming concert will mark the 150th anniversary of the composer Maurice Ravel.
The Kassia Music: Ravel at 150 concert will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer and will celebrate the composer’s birthday. Ravel is best known for his “Bolero,” which was featured in 1979’s hit film “10,” which starred Bo Derek and Dudley Moore and is one of the most popular pieces in classical music.
The upcoming concert will highlight other pieces, however. The program includes the “Violin Sonata,” the “String Quartet,” and a work by Bernard Vallandingham and Sam Post entitled “Tombeau de Ravel.” When they plan events like this, organizers often use poster printing methods to advertise them.
Vallandingham and Post, both composers, founded Kassia Music in 2016, with clarinetist Lauren Geist also on board. The artists create their works by blending diverse elements, such as Post blending the counterpoint and harmony of Johann Sebastian Bach with rhythms ranging from ragtime to pop to tango.
Vallandingham, on the other hand, draws his inspiration from the rich music from Eastern Europe, and composers such as Prokofiev and Bartok, adding a dash of folk music traditions. Kassia Music has performed in venues such as the National Gallery of Art and the Kennedy Center.
The concert is scheduled for Saturday, November 15 at 7.00 pm, with the “Kassia Kids” performing first, at 6.45 pm. The church is located at 6201 Dunrobbin Drive, and there will be a reception after the performance.
