Neo-soul duo comes to Bethesda
A musical duo who came from the neo-soul movement in Philadelphia will appear in Bethesda.
Kindred the Family Soul, known simply as Kindred, is the team of Aja Graydon and Fatin Dantzler, a married couple. The neo-soul scene also produced Jill Scott, who helped them get started by introducing them to Steve McKeever of Hidden Beach Recordings, who heard Kindred in 2000 and signed them.
In 2003, Hidden Beach dropped “Surrender to Love,” Kindred’s debut album. Their second was titled “In This Life Together,” which Hidden Beach released in 2005. The title is a reference to the book “With Ossie & Ruby: In This Life Together,” by Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, a superstar couple.
In 2004, “Surrender to Love” was nominated as “Best R&B/Soul Album, Group Band or Duo” by the Soul Train Music Awards. Two years later, they won a BET Award for BET J Cool Like That Award. They released “The Arrival,” their third LP, in 2008, and in 2011, they dropped “Love Has No Recession” with guests that included Snoop Dogg. The song “Magic Happens” came from that album, and went on to become a top 40 Urban AC hit.

Kindred the Family Soul will be at the Bethesda Theater on August 30. Shows like this are often advertised with posters, which organizers can find at print shops.
