What's Happening in Bethesda, MD…

Bethesda hosts hip hop concert

Hip hop fans should make plans to attend an upcoming concert.

EPMD is a hip hop duo whose name stands for “Erick and Parrish Making Dollars,” referring to Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith. They are from Brentwood, New York, and first got together in 1987, kicking off a career that now spans almost 40 years.

They released their first album, “Strictly Business,” in 1988. It featured the song “Strictly Business” that became an underground hit, sampling Eric Clapton’s version of “I Shot the Sheriff” by Bob Marley. The group continued to add elements from other works (sampling) and combined with their approach to funk, made an impact on hip hop. One song, “You’re a Customer,” combined bits of “Fly Like an Eagle” by Steve Miller, “Jungle Boogie” of Kool & the Gang, the bass line from “Cheap Sunglasses” by ZZ Top, and a drum machine.

The duo has broken up and reunited twice. The first hiatus was from 1993 to 1996, with the duo reuniting in 1997. Their second breakup came soon after, and they reunited again in 2006, and have been together since then. A review says:

“Great turn out, . . . [they] still got it.”

EPMD will be at the Bethesda Theater on July 12. To advertise events like this, organizers will often use classic posters, which they can find at local print shops.
