What's Happening in Bethesda, MD…

Renowned storyteller headed to Bethesda

A storyteller who created one of the most popular radio shows of all time is coming to Bethesda.

Born in Anoka, Minnesota, Gary Edward Keillor, aka Garrison Keillor, is best known for the radio show “A Prairie Home Companion,” (APHC) which he created for Minnesota Public Radio. He hosted the show from 1974 to 2016, and his humor reflects life in the Midwest.

Keillor toured nationally with APHC to celebrate the show’s 50th anniversary, and is still on the road, giving fans an opportunity to enjoy the iconic show. In addition to Keillor, the performers include sound effects genius Fred Newman, actors Sue Scott and Tim Russell, and Rich Dworsky, who is APHC’s music director, and the band. Surprise guest performers will be taking part as well.

Keillor also created a fictional town, Lake Wobegon Minnesota, which provided the background for many of his works, including the books “Leaving Home: A Collection of Lake Wobegon Stories,” and “Lake Wobegon Days.”

He is also a noted voice actor, a played the detective Guy Noir, a character he created for the comic skits featured on “A Prairie Home Companion.”

Garrison Keillor is bringing his show “A Prairie Home Companion” to The Music Center at Strathmore on June 18. When they plan shows like this, organizers often find it convenient to use posters to advertise them, which they can order at local print shops.
