What's Happening in Bethesda, MD…

Famed classical ensemble coming to Bethesda

One of the most celebrated chamber orchestras in the world will be performing in Bethesda soon.

Sir Neville Marriner created the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields in 1958 and was its music director for most of its history, from the time of its founding until 2011, with a gap from 1974 to 1980, when Iona Brown took over. In 2011, Joshua Bell became the orchestra’s music director.

The Academy has become so successful because it takes an unusual approach to its music. Unlike most orchestras where the conductor can assume almost a dictatorial stance, the Academy’s work is driven by the players themselves. This collaboration results in a direct connection between the audience and the orchestra.

The orchestra tours internationally fairly frequently, and in the 2023/2024 season, they visited Australia with Joshua Bell; and Poland and Germany with Beatrice Rana and Adam Fischer. The Chamber Ensemble toured both the United States and England.

The upcoming concert features Canadian pianist Bruce Liu, who will be playing Mozart’s “Piano Concerto No. 9.” The other works on the program are “Quiet City” by Aaron Copland; “Shaker Loops” by John Adams; and Haydn’s Symphony No. 2. Joshua Bell, who has become famous outside of classical music, will not be appearing at this performance.

The concert is scheduled for March 6, at 8.00 pm, at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda. When they schedule concerts like this, organizers frequently advertise them with posters, which they find at print shops.
