Celebrated vocalist coming to Bethesda
A Grammy-winning songwriter/singer is coming to Bethesda.
Peabo Bryson is a native of Greenville, South Carolina, whose love of music came from his mother, who frequently took the entire family to live concerts given by the era’s best known Black artists. He was only 14 when he made his professional debut, singing backup for a Greenville group known as Al Freeman and the Upsetters.
Two years later, he was touring with Moses Dillard and the Tex-Town Display, another local band. Bryson got his break when the Dillard outfit held a recording session at Bang Records in Atlanta. The band did not impress Eddie Briscoe, the label’s manager, but he did like Bryson and signed him as a producer, writer, and arranger. He also encouraged Bryson to perform his own material, with the result that Bryson released “Underground Music” on that label. He released his first album, “Peabo,” in 1977, and was signed by Capitol Records.
During his career, Bryson has often sung ballads with female vocalists such as Roberta Flack, Regina Belle and Celine Dion. He has performed opera and has sung on two Disney soundtracks. He is also a two-time Grammy winner. A review notes:
Bryson will perform at the Bethesda Theater on February 21 at 8.30 pm. When they want to advertise events like this, organizers can turn to poster printing.
