Worcester wants to help inmates re-enter society
Recently, Joseph D. Early, Jr., the Worcester County District Attorney, joined other district attorneys throughout the state to request that the legislature appropriate $5m to fund re-entry programs for inmates who have finished their sentences.
The programs would be community-based, residential efforts that Early says are necessary, because no one should be released without having access to services immediately that will help them adjust safely to life in their community. Without having such programs in place, he argues, it is difficult for people to get their lives restarted, and easy for them to give up and reoffend.
In a letter to the lawmakers, the attorneys said they have strongly supported these types of programs, as well as a commitment to provide the financial support they need, for some time. The aim of programs that work with people just being released from custody is to give them the services they need to succeed when they are no longer imprisoned. The programs reduce the chance of them reoffending, as well as providing them with a job, a safe living situation, treatment for any addictions, and case management.
Release from prison can be a source of great joy and tremendous anxiety at the same time, particularly if the person has been incarcerated for some time.
Programs like this are important, so officials might consider working with a brochure printing company to create brochures for residents explaining them.
