Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives (MBI), a life sciences incubator based on Worcester, has welcomed two new startups.
Proper Stagg Environmental Group and Roper Thermals have joined the MBI cohort. Proper Stagg Environmental Group employs advanced pyrolysis technology, which is a process based on heat that decomposes organic waste without oxygen, to convert wood waste into renewable energy, biochar, and captured carbon. Roper Thermals, the oldest operating manufacturer of phase change materials in North America, specializes in producing technical-grade and 99 percent pure paraffin waxes and oils, refined over nearly three decades for applications in thermal management and related industries. They join many other companies working out of MBI.
These new startups joining MBI comes soon after Worcester Polytechnic Institute and 31 regional partners teamed with the incubator to launch BioHub to support the bio-industrial revolution in Central Massachusetts. The BioHub is backed by $5.2 million in funding from the state and is looking to train more than 500 people, complete 24 pilot programs, and create 3,000 new positions over the next three years.

CEO and president of MBI, Jon Weaver, said the foundation of the BioHub designation is rooted in many years of collaboration and planning in the region to support the talent and companies that fuel this industry.
