The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) and the Healey-Driscoll Administration has awarded $354,443 to Clark University in Worcester to expand access to education in the experiential life sciences.
The Healey-Driscoll Administration and the MLSC have awarded $12.3 million through the Education and Workforce Development Grant Program of the MLSC of which these funds are a part. Such investments will be used to expand out-of-school learning opportunities, access to hands-on life sciences education, degree programs and certifications aligned with industry, and workforce development initiatives that prepare students for careers in the life sciences. The funds are also designed to strengthen the pipeline for talent in the life sciences throughout the Commonwealth.
Associate Provost and Dean of Research at Clark, Jennifer Hanselman, said that this award will provide students with enhanced laboratory equipment and facilities, along with the hands-on experiences needed to be successful in research careers, graduate education, and the workforce of life sciences.
Funding from the MLSC has enabled the university to modernize its biotech workforce training infrastructure and create the Center for Biomolecular Research and Experiential Learning. Professor Don Spratt, director of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program and chair of the university’s chemistry department, said this funding has transformed how students learn and is providing them with requisite experience and data analytics skills.
