The Downtown Worcester Business Improvement District (BID), the city of Worcester, and the state are collaborating on a new outdoor experience that will be coming to the downtown area of the city.
The city has been given a grant of $54,000 by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to use existing parking spaces in the area around City Hall for the purpose of outdoor dining. These funds are part of efforts over the past year to support businesses in the downtown. The BID last year conducted a study on how to help restaurants and beautify the downtown with the recommendation to install parklets that will provide the infrastructure that restaurants need to serve customers outdoors.
Worcester will be trying out the parklets this month. Parklets are also known as street seats or curbside seating and incorporate greenery and seating to accommodate the demand for public space. Edward Augustus Jr., City Manager, said if they are successful the parklet program could be expanded. Chashu Ramen + Izakaya across the street from City Hall on Franklin Street will be one of the test sites for the parklets. Local Print shops can be hired to create Signs and other points of information so residents and visitors can find such areas during the warmer months.
The BID will also use some of the funding to install planters in the downtown area as a calming measure for traffic for pedestrians.
