Worcester serves as headquarters for star-studded film

Several locations in Worcester are being used in the upcoming film ‘Sea of Trees’, starring the Academy Award-nominated Ken Watanabe, and the Academy Award-winning Matthew McConaughey. The city is also serving as the unit headquarters for the film.

The plot of the movie involves a suicidal American who befriends a Japanese man as they are lost together in the Aokigahara forest, which lies at the northwest foot of Mount Fuji. The story follows the men as they search for a way out of the forest. Purgatory Chasm in Massachussetts is doubling as Aokigahara forest for the film. Filming is also taking place in Foxboro.

Film units often need to visit Print companies even when they’re on location, to print script changes, or create Signs for various locations and directions.

Directing ‘Sea of Trees’ is two-time Academy Award-nominee director Gus Van Sant. Some of the film will also be shot in Japan on location.

Joining the film for scenes being shot in other parts of Massachusetts will be Naomi Watts, who has also received an Oscar nomination. Purgatory Chasm was closed to the public for three days to avoid disruption with the filming crews. The Massachusetts scenes are set to be completed early in September.

BLOOM, an international production, sales, and financing company introduced ‘The Sea of Trees’ earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival to a very positive reception, according to a news release.
