What's Happening in Worcester, MA…

Worcester public schools' logo sparks debate

As part of a general rebranding effort, Worcester's schools have redesigned their logo. However, objections to the new logo design mean final approval has been delayed.

The old logo depicts a hand-held oil lamp that resembles the type a jinni might live in, and is said to represent the light of knowledge. The new logo is far more stylized, consisting of two bent arms that converge to form a heart that resembles a letter ‘W’. The design was developed from suggestions given by both students and adults, but was particularly favored by the students, according to Sarah Kyriazis, manager of digital learning and instructional technology for the district.

The new logo is only one part of the rebranding work Kyriazis is heading. Others include updating the brand statement of the school district, its tagline, and the schools' website. A completely redone site will be unveiled before the school year starts. The changes made to these elements were based on a great deal of feedback from city residents, school staff, families, and students; the actual design development was handled by two design companies the school department hired. However, the only real point of contention in all the changes was the logo.

Joseph Petty, Worcester's mayor, decided to hold off voting on the logo until the full School Committee meets this August.
