The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS) has named Robert W. Hyers to its 2025 class of fellows.
Hyers is head of the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and the George I. Alden Professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).
This award is the highest recognition given out by TMS, which is a professional organization with more than 11,000 members. It honors members who are leading contributors to, and authorities on, the practice of materials science, metallurgy, and technology. Advances in the fields of engineering or research work, and service to TMS are among the characteristics of honorees. News of such notable achievements is often disseminated throughout a college community with flyer printing.
Hyers expressed his honor in being named such a fellow of TMS, as this has been his professional home for almost 30 years. He added his gratitude for the friendships, the warm welcome he received, and for the opportunity to learn and share new knowledge.
Hyers become a member of the faculty at WPI in 2023 after previously being among the faculty at the University of Massachusetts Amherst for 20 years. He worked at Boston Metal as chief technology officer and president, and as a staff scientist at the Marshall Space Flight Center/Electrostatic Levitation Lab of NASA.
He will be honored at the TMS annual meeting and exhibition in Las Vegas in March 2025.
