The Worcester Housing Authority (WHA) has been asked by the Worcester City Council to investigate the construction of a large scale affordable housing complex, the first since 1992.
The request has come from Mayor Joseph Petty Jr. The WHA is to work with the City Manager and his administration in this effort. There has been an inquiry as to whether there are any sites in the city on which such housing could be built. Such groups as the WHA might look to using a Logo Design to identify such sites.
Property records of the city show that the WHA owns several parcels of land which are vacant. These are:
• A total of 0.30 acres between Fountain Street and I-290 that are two WHA parking lots
• A total of a quarter of an acre about one-and-a-half blocks from Kelley Square that are also two back-to-back parking lots on Harding and Washington Streets.
• A parcel behind the Webster Square Towers on Mill Street that covers 0.37 acres
• An empty lot between Southbridge and Cambridge Street in a residential neighborhood on Lewis Street spanning 0.6 acres.
• Another lot of 0.6 acres on Rodney Street near Green Hill Park
• A forested parcel spanning 0.16 acres on Tacoma Street across from the Curtis Apartments.
None of these properties covers more than an acre but the WHA has built on small properties in the past.
