What's Happening in Worcester, MA…

Worcester enjoys pop-up art gallery

On November 6, a stream of college students, visitors, and locals visited a storefront on Franklin Street, downtown.

There were no fixtures or furniture in the space, but the walls were covered with illustrations, photos, mixed-media paintings, and sculptures, and all of them were lit by the type of work lights used on construction sites.

The venue was Worcester PopUp Gallery, a collaborative venture between the Worcester Business Development Corporation and the Worcester Cultural Coalition, which allows artists to temporarily use the unoccupied space.

Since opening in 2014, the gallery has been the scene of potlucks, poetry nights, and salsa dancing demonstrations. The idea is to keep art accessible to members of the public, since neither event-goers nor the artists have to pay to use the venue.

The current show is titled ‘Re-Imagining the City’, and features the work of four artists who use their work to show their vision of “the city”. The artists are Kate Murphy, who works in mixed media; Mauro DePasquale, who does multimedia illustrations; photographer Chris Markman, who uses drones to take aerial photos; and sculptor Victor Pacheco. The exhibit was curated by Joseph Hersh.

The exhibit is open Thursdays through November 30, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Gallery managers might consider working with a poster printing company on a colorful poster to spread the word about the show.
