Worcester celebrates decade of chamber music

The Worcester Chamber Music Society (WCMS) is celebrating 10 successful years of music this month.

The WCMS kicked of its anniversary season on September 19 with a “Birthday Bash” in Tuckerman Hall, featuring works by Prokofiev, Brahms, and Shostakovich.

In September 2006, enthusiastic Worcester residents attended a chamber music concert in the basement of St. Paul's Cathedral. The members of the new group were all professional musicians, some of whom were well-known, but there had been very little chamber music played in Worcester before the group formed, and their reception was uncertain. However, the first concert featured the “Brandenburg Concerto” by J.S. Bach, a popular piece, and approximately 300 people came to the performance, creating an “overflow” crowd. The local newspaper wrote the air was full of “anticipatory electricity”, and the WCMS was about to be successfully launched.

The first season for the group included only four concerts. Today, the ensemble plays a number of engagements at various venues. There are “Main Stage” concerts at places like Tuckerman Hall; the “Cafe Concert” series which is staged at Nuovo Restaurant, with dinner preceding the concerts; free concerts for families and seniors; and summer concerts at Clark University.

Society officers might like to work with a poster printing company to create a series of colorful Posters that announce the concerts and venues for the upcoming season.
