Worcester is once again a “Tree City USA.” The Arbor Day Foundation is recognizing the city for its commitment to forest management in an urban environment for the 34th consecutive year.
Massachusetts’ second most populous city is one of more than 3,400 communities across the United States that has this designation and can display the Tree City USA Logo Design on its signage.
Edward Augustus Jr., city manager, expressed his pride in receiving this honor once again. He said the city appreciates and understands the benefits of a healthy urban forest and added that they city is committed to doing everything it can to manage an effective urban forest now and for years to come.
The program has four criteria for receiving this designation:
• An ordinance for tree care
• A tree department or board
• An observance or proclamation for Arbor Day
• An annual forestry budget of at least $2 per person
The Worcester Tree Initiative has helped the city in planting 30,000 trees between 2009 and 2014. Last year, over 200 new trees were planted by the city, with $1.7m being allocated in the fiscal year 2019 budget for green infrastructure. Over the past five fiscal years, over $7.7 million has been allocated by the city for green infrastructure .
The Tree City USA program was started in 1976. It is a nationwide program that provides the framework so that communities can expand and manage their trees and other greenery.
