What's Happening in Worcester, MA…

Worcester art celebration reaches milestone year

stART on the Street began 15 years ago, and residents of Worcester recently turned out to party in honor of the anniversary.

Joining them were over 250 crafters and artists, who came to Park Avenue, where the festival is usually held, and set up their tents. Sweets, fresh lemonade, and other goodies were available from local vendors.

Live music was provided by local artists who played near Elm Park, and festival attendees were treated to exhibitions of fencing, and mock battles fought with historically accurate weapons.

stART was created in 2002 by a group of local art lovers and artists, all volunteers, who wanted to bring additional culture to central Massachusetts, and particularly Worcester. The festival, stART on the Street, is the organization's primary event, a celebration of culture, music, and the arts, that lasts an entire day.

The festival first took place on Worcester's Main Street, but as the number of attendees and accolades increased, it was moved in 2006 to Park Avenue. Since that first day, the number of crafters and artists has increased each year, with hundreds of people now taking part.

Bands that play everything from world music to jazz to rock-n-roll perform on several stages, while street performers demonstrate such skills as Africa-Brazilian capoeira – a form of martial arts that combines music, dance, and acrobatics.

Events like this can be even more fun if organizers decorate the venue with colorful banners.
