What's Happening in Worcester, MA…

Worcester already preparing St. Patrick's Day parade

There's still snow on the ground, but Worcester, Massachusetts, is already getting ready to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with what organizers say is the “second largest St. Patrick's parade in New England,” according to an article on Telegram.com.

This year will be the 35th time the parade has marched down Park Avenue, an event made possible by a small group of organizers and an “army of volunteers.” They held their first organizing meeting January 5, 2017.

This year's grand marshal is Mary Anne Dube, who retired from a career teaching elementary school, and is now a mentor and supervisor of student teachers at Anna Maria College, located in Paxton. She joined the parade committee for the first time in 1984. Although the parade today celebrates the city's diversity, with many different groups marching together, at its heart it's a celebration of the community's Irish heritage.

There are several fundraisers and events scheduled to take place before the parade, including the Grand Marshal Dance. The dance will take place January 28, 2017, a Saturday, at 6 p.m. The venue is St. Spyridon Cathedral Hall on Russell Street.

This year's parade is slated for March 12, 2017, a Sunday, and will start at Webster Square and end up at Elm Park.

Events like this can benefit if organizers place colorful banners along the route to add to the atmosphere.
