On December 9, 2016, Congressman Jim McGovern announced that the Department of Health and Human Services had awarded $836,858 to UMass Medical School in Worcester, to support its research into treatments and cures for vascular and heart diseases.
The article appeared on the GoLocalWorcester.com website.
McGovern noted the federal funds being made available to UMass Medical School will enable it to continue work on what McGovern calls “cutting-edge medical research” that will not only save lives, but also support economic growth in the state.
The grant will fund further work on the Worcester Heart Attack Study, which has been underway since the 1980s, with funding provided by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The study has complied about 40 years of information about heart attacks among the residents of Greater Worcester, and the results of their medical care, both in the hospital and after release.
The evidence shows that even though patients are older and sicker, they have fewer heart attacks, and the prognosis of those who do have an attack is better, both in and out of the hospital. The man behind the study, Dr. Robert Goldberg, said this this is because patients’ care is more aggressive and based on evidence.
