Special Worcester event highlights visual impairment

White Cane Safety Awareness Day will be held in Worcester this weekend for the ninth year.

This walk will entail community leaders with blindfolds walking with a sighted guide through the streets of the city, highlighting both the challenges faced by the visually impaired community and the walkability of the city in general.

This one-of-a-kind event is being held by the Office on Human Rights and Accessibility and the Accessibility Advisory Commission of the city. It is designed to educate drivers of vehicles in the Commonwealth, community leaders, and the public of the need to better understand the challenges faced to blind people in the community as they travel on the sidewalks.

Local print shops can play an important role in making such events known to the public with flyers, posters, and other materials distributed throughout a city.

Those participating in the event will include university deans and chancellors, city department heads, public safety officers, and others who are leaders in their communities from both Boston and Worcester. The walk will begin from a location to be announced, and will cover the city streets before returning to the Saxe Room at the Worcester Public Library for everyone to share their experiences and recommendations for improving the walkability of the city.

This event is free and will start at 11:00 am this Saturday, October 15.
