Schools and residents of Worcester receive additional funding
Unspent funds from Fiscal Year 2024 of $2.2 million of tax relief will be given to residents of the city as well as $10 million to the Worcester Public Schools (WPS).
News of such funding is often spread throughout a city with flyer printing, which is a great cost effective way to communicate with a wide audience.
The WPS will receive $7,585,935 for supporting capital and operating expenses to support the district in additional costs due to increased obligations and an increase in the student population. The New High School Fund will also receive $2,448,439 that will go towards the replacement of Burncoat Middle and High Schools and the debt services associated with this project. The New High School Fund will reduce how these major capital expenses impact operating budgets in the future and help the city prepare for costs associated with future debt.
Eric D. Batista, city manager, expressed his happiness about allocating these funds to the Worcester Public Schools to help with capital and operating expenses and provide funding for the development of new schools. He added that this funding aligns with one of his major goals in the strategic plan which was recently released which is to invest in quality education. He said he is working closely with Superintendent Dr. Rachel Monárrez to ensure the current school stock is maintained and that the city will be able to fund the building of new schools to serve the students of the city well into the future.
