President gives commencement address to Worcester Tech grads

For the ’14 class at Worcester Tech, there are unlikely to be any hazy memories over who provided their graduation speech. They received the honor of having US President Barack Obama as their commencement speaker at their June graduation.

It caps off a remarkable change in fortunes for the institute. In 2006, when Dr. Sheila Harrity took over as Principal of Worcester Tech, the school was rated as one of the lowest performing schools in the state of Massachusetts. Now, in terms of testing scores, the school is among the top schools in Massachusetts, and both graduation rates and rates of students who go on to higher education have improved.

Dr. Harrity was honored as a National High School Principal of the Year last month in Washington, DC. All of these facts could easily be included in the school’s next brochure printing order to attract interested students.

Naomi Desilets, valedictorian for the class of 2014, was at her internship when she got word that President Obama would be sharing the state with her at commencement, according to MassLive. She told the blog that she was actually feeding the animals at Heffer Farm when her phone lit up with text messages about the President’s visit. She did not believe it at first, until she found a press release online confirming the news.
