Bicycle Alley, which has been doing business in Worcester’s Webster Square for over 30 years, will close on October 31, but bicycle enthusiasts and fans of the shop have no reason to worry, because it will reopen the following day, November 1, as Bikes and Life.
The store, which comprises 10,000 square feet, will feature Cannondale and Giant bicycles. Bikes and Life was founded by John Antretter, who has several bike stores around the country. He says he wants to take what was best about Bicycle Alley and add onto it.
In August, David Kahn, who owned Bicycle Alley, announced he intended to retire and close the shop. For several weeks, it appeared there would no longer be any bikes sold at the location. In the last few weeks, however, Jim Mercier, Bicycle Alley’s original owner, ran into Antretter in Duluth, Georgia, at a festival.
Antretter said Mercier told him about the shop, and asked if Antretter could move quickly on an opportunity. Within days, Antretter had signed a lease on the shop for five years, with an option to buy the entire building. Antretter is also keeping the shop’s remaining eight employees on the job.
The new owner could have Banners printed to celebrate the change, as well as the renaming of the shop.
