New street to be built in Worcester

MassWorks has given the city of Worcester an infrastructure grant of $1.5m so that it can build a new street through the development at Polar Park.

Polar Park is the largest economic development in the region and will be home to a new ballpark and stadium for the Worcester Red Sox.

The new street will be called Green Island Boulevard and will connect the intersection of Hermon and Lamartine Streets (at the edge of the neighborhood of Green Island) to Madison Street. It will run through the development of Polar Park and a redeveloped parcel of land that spans 13 acres and was once the home of Wyman Gordon. The parcel of land will have apartments, a hotel, office space, and a parking garage.

There will be one lane of traffic in each direction on the new street. It will also have bike lanes and parking on the street, coming in at an expected cost of $3.35m. Developers of such new streets often use local print shops to create eye-catching signs that will help direct traffic on these streets.

The creation of Green Island Boulevard is part of a larger project to revise traffic flow near the stadium. In addition to this project, Kelley Square will have a new rotary soon, which will help to alleviate some of the congestion in what is known to be one of the state’s busiest intersections.
