Ground has been broken for the construction of the new headquarters for the Worcester Regional Food Hub.
Banner printing can be used at such sites to inform residents of such upcoming projects and their benefits for the community.
The new headquarters will include a retail storefront, storage space for both dry and cold foods, a community and multipurpose events space, and five production kitchens. The kitchens will be fully equipped with a blast freezer, a bottling line for sauces and beverages, large baking equipment, dehydrators, an ice machine, and a freezer dryer.
United States Representative James McGovern said this will be more than just a food hub and will make a hub of innovation out of the city of Worcester. He added that this project is a model for combining the resources for the municipal, state, and local governments to create change in communities.
The goal of the project is to address food insecurity in the area of Worcester in several ways—by providing food, by providing kitchen spaces and classes, and supporting food start-ups in the area. This new location at Union Station will enable it to consolidate its activities spread between Quinsigamond Community College and the Greendale People’s Church, and to add activity to the station itself.
Shon Rainford, director of the Food Hub, said that construction should begin within the next couple of months, with the completion of the project expected in about a year.
