New distribution centers to open in Worcester
Two Worcester distribution centers are being planned by Amazon.
The e-retail giant will be opening a “last mile” delivery station on Goddard Memorial Drive that is close to the Worcester Regional Airport and was once occupied by TE Connectivity. Covering 177,000 square feet, the property was purchased from TE Connectivity by an entity of R.J. Kelly for $7.2m. Such delivery stations take packages from fulfillment centers, sort them, and then load them onto vehicles for delivery to customers.
A spokesperson for Amazon said that the new delivery station will create hundreds of part-time and full-time jobs, with pay starting at a minimum of $15 an hour and good benefits. It is likely that some of these positions will require business card printing. The spokesperson added that the company is also looking to become part of the Worcester community and make investments in the community to support those who work and live there.
The other distribution center will be on the other side of the city on the site of the Greendale Mall, which is now mostly vacant. This one will span 121,000 square feet and will also serve as a warehouse. A real estate and development company in Boston, Finard Properties, purchased the mall last year for $7.1m.
The location on Goddard Drive is expected to open early this year.
