Major grant awarded to college in Worcester
The National Science Foundation has awarded Worcester Polytechnic Institute a grant of $2.5m to increase the enrollment, graduation, and retention of students from low-income backgrounds majoring in computer science.
A program for incoming first-year students who are academically talented will be created by the Path to Achieving Success and Sense of Belonging in Computer Science (PASS-CS) project. The students eligible for this program need to be eligible for federal Pell grants.
The program will include a mini-bridge summer session before the start of the academic year. It will have bootcamps on computer programming, physics, and math. There will also be workshops to help students navigate through college life and to aid them with utilizing resources on campus. There will also be mentors from faculty and the opportunity to form cohorts so that students can study together to help build a sense of belonging and community.
Colleges with programs like this may find brochure printing to be useful to offer more details about them to eligible students.
The PASS-CS will begin next year with 8 to 10 undergraduate students. Scholarships of a maximum of $15,000 per year for up to four years will be awarded to students in the program. Additional selected students will be awarded scholarships in 2025 and 2026, with a total of 28 students expected in the program.
