The fourth cohort of the Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) in Engineering program has been launched at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). This is a program for educators of middle and high school grades.
RET is a program that lasts for six weeks and provides educators with experiences in research in engineering. Erin Solovey, principal investigator; Kathy Chen, co-principal investigator; and Donna Taylor lead the program. Participants will develop curricula and classroom activities and enhance their disciplinary knowledge to increase the awareness and engagement of students in the areas of engineering and computing.
Local Print shops can assist with such programs by providing printed materials for the classroom that teachers can take away with them.
Participants will engage in research projects along with faculty. Among the projects to be conducted during the program are antibiotic resistance in mycobacteria, top testing of interventional devices for cardiovascular diseases, magnesium production and recycling for clean energy, and removing polyfluorinated alkylated substances from contaminated soils.
Teachers in the program, in addition to their research projects, will participate in professional development sessions led by the STEM Education Center. The integration of their research experiences into instruction that aligns with STEM standards and real-world experience will be supported by these sessions. These sessions will also connect to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and strengthen partnerships among elementary and secondary schools, industry, and WPI.
