All ages invited to prom in Worcester

Thrive Support and Advocacy will be holding its inaugural Prom for All Ages in Worcester next month.

The non-profit organization supports children and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. It helps over 1,000 families in central and MetroWest Massachusetts with resources, holding recreational and social activities, offering educational programs for youth, and providing group homes for adults.

Sean Rose, president and CEO of the organization, says that there are no state funds for the recreational and social programs, so fundraising efforts are needed to host these events. He said that this was how the idea for a prom for people of all ages was developed. He added that the past two years have been particularly difficult for the those they serve, so providing an event where they can get out and socialize is one of the goals of the organization.

Rose pointed out that proms are typically a rite of passage for young adults who look forward to renting a tuxedo, getting flowers, dressing up, and dancing the night away. Such an opportunity is not often afforded the people his organization serves so this prom will be for those who are teenagers as well as seniors.

Thrive is currently seeking sponsorships for the prom. Such fundraising efforts can be made known throughout a community with poster printing. The Prom for All Ages will take place at Polar Park on Friday, May 27.
