A groundbreaking ceremony has been held for the first phase of the Market Landing Park construction and expansion project. This will create a greener and larger waterfront for Newburyport.
This phase is expected to cost $6 million and will convert several parking lots on the waterfront into green spaces that will be on the west and east sides of the site which spans 4.6 acres. Features of the site will include a shared-use path to connect the two parts of the Clipper City Rail Trail, new park wings, and many more opportunities for relaxation, socialization, and activities on the waterfront. Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform the community of such important projects.
A grant from the state Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities in the amount of $400,000 and a MassTrails grant of the same amount from the Department of Conservation and Recreation were awarded to the city for this project. Another $1 million was given by the Herman Roy Trust, which is being backed by a loan of $3 million from the Community Preservation Committee.
Construction of the waterfront will be done by Onyx Corporation, based in Acton. Mayor Sean Reardon said that there will be opportunities to add features to the project such as new interpretative panels and a new shipbuilding sculpture, among others.
This phase of the project is expected to be completed next year.
