Grant awarded to Newburyport for wastewater facility design

The city of Newburyport has been awarded a grant of $35,000 by the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission (MVPC) for the design phase of a project that will replace and upgrade clarifiers at the Wastewater Treatment Facility of the city. The goal is to reduce pollution in the Merrimack River.

There are two clarifiers operating at the Wastewater Treatment Facility. These are needed for removing pollutants and suspended solids from wastewater before the water is discharged into the river. Approximately 3.4 million gallons of wastewater per day are treated by the facility.

The planned project includes retrofitting the existing two clarifiers and installing a new one. Such improvements will protect the health of the ecosystem of the Merrimack River and ensure continued regulatory compliance.

Local print shops can help spread news of funding for such projects and their benefits for a city and the region.

Superintendent of the Wastewater Treatment Facility, Chris Pratt, said that the grant will enable the city to continue with the design of this project. He is appreciative of the support of the MVPC as his team works very hard to make sure that there is effective treatment of the wastewater and the discharged water protects the fisheries and ecological health of the river.

The total cost of the project is expected to be $590,000. The preliminary design work is being conducted by APEX.
