Recreation center comes to life in Newburyport
Construction is currently underway of a new recreation and community center in Newburyport.
The cost of the project is $8.3m. When completed it will be the home of the Recreation and Youth Services (RYS) department of the city.
Among its features are a lobby, offices for the RYS staff, a gymnasium, quiet study areas, an early education center, community gathering spaces for adults and children, and a makerspace. There will also be areas designated for young people that will enable staff to monitor activities from nearby offices. It is on Low Street and is across from Rupert A. Nock Middle School and the Edward G. Molin Upper Elementary School and will connect to athletic facilities that already exist.
Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform residents of such upcoming projects.
Work being done includes gutting the interior of what was once the National Guard building so it can be converted into this new space. The contract for the project was awarded to L.D. Russo Inc. which is based in Harvard. Their bid, which was the lowest, was for $7.1m to build the new center.
Included in the bid is a base price of $6.8m with an option of an additional $317,050 to replace the roof. A project manager can be hired for an additional $214,013 with $497,538 for a contingency budget of seven percent.
