Recreation center to be built in Newburyport
Clearing of the site and demolition have begun on the future recreation center for the city of Newburyport.
The center will be on Low Street and is expected to cost $8.3 million. It is across the street from the Rupert A. Nock Middle School and the Edward G. Molin Upper Elementary School.
The Recreation and Youth Services (RYS) department will be housed in the new center as it has not had a permanent home since its boiler was determined to be unusable in 2021.
The new recreation center will include a lobby, offices for the RYS department, a flexible maker and art space, meeting and quiet study space, a space for early education, and multipurpose space. Outside there will be built a half basketball court along with a enclosed play space, a new patio, and an open lawn area. Brochure printing can be used to provide more details on the features and amenities of such projects and their benefits for the community.
L.D. Russo, based in Harvard, was awarded the contract to build the center. Elena Russo, chief Executive Officer of L.D. Russo, said that this is an extremely exciting project. She added that demo and site work are well underway such that construction work is on track to begin soon.
Mayor Sean Reardon also expressed his excitement about seeing progress being made at the site. He said that there will be an official groundbreaking ceremony this fall.
