Overnight homeless shelter now open in Newburyport

An emergency overnight shelter is now open to serving those in the greater Newburyport area. It is at the Salvation Army on Water Street in Newburyport.

The shelter is made possible by a partnership of the Salvation Army, nine local churches and organizations, and Emmaus House, Inc. There are 15 trained and certified staff members working at the shelter and they meet all emergency sheltering requirements of FEMA and MEMA. They also hold certifications in First Aid and National Mental Health First Aid.

The shelter will also receive assistance from North Shore Regional Navigator for Coordinated Entry and Manager of Rental Assistance and Permanent Housing Programs, Marielis Batista. Batista will be at the shelter every second and fourth Friday for community referrals from agencies.

The shelter will be open when outside temperatures are below 20°F or by request from the mayor, Sean Reardon, during severe weather or storms. Its hours will be from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am. Those seeking to use the shelter need to have a valid ID and will not be admitted if they are intoxicated. Service animals will be allowed in the shelter. Pets of those seeking shelter will be temporarily housed offsite in accommodations arranged through the City Health Department.
