The Joppa Flats Education Center in Newburyport will be holding a couple of interesting events next month.
The first will be “The Wonder and the Wow: A Wetland Walk and Lake Study.” Participants in this walk will use scoops and nets to collect fish and aquatic invertebrates to observe under a microscope. Participants will meet at the parking lot and then walk along the edge of the woods to arrive at the lake. Along the way there will be pollinators, wildflowers, and displays of courtship of wetland birds and the forest.
The cost for this program is $28 for adult members and $32 for adult non-members. Registration is required. This will take place from 9:30 am to noon next Saturday, June 6.
A field trip to the Kennebunk Plains for birdwatching will take place soon after. Kennebunk Plains is an ecologically significant sandplain grassland featuring a successional pitch pine barren. Co-managed by The Nature Conservancy the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, it provides an important habitat for several rare breeding species seldom seen in other parts of New England. Along a grassland walk, participants will listen and look for sparrows, grasshoppers, meadowlarks, and sandpipers.
This program costs $60 for adult members and $72 for adult non-members, and registration is also required. It will be on Sunday, June 7 from 6:30 am to 2:00 pm.
Such special events can be promoted throughout a community with poster printing.
