Funding approved for Newburyport housing plan

By vote of the Newburyport City Council, $230,000 of funding from the Community Preservation Act will be transferred to the Affordable Housing Trust.

More information about such funding can be made available to residents with flyer printing.

This is significant as the city is obligated to spend 10 percent of the funding from the Community Preservation Act on affordable housing. Sharif Zeid, City Councilor from Ward 1, said that $200,000 of the funds will be put in reserve for future development while the remaining amount will be used to update the housing production plan of the city which the state requires be done every five years.

Zeid said that housing production changes over time. He added that the plan needs updating due to the influx of refugees from Afghanistan, short term rentals, shifts in demographic trends, and an aging population. He said that having an updated plan is an important component of any grant applications. The $30,000 will go towards paying an outside consultant to assist with the plan.

The $200,000 of the funds will go towards the Affordable Housing Trust in reserve so that in the future it can be used as grant leverage for new housing or to create affordable housing if an opportunity presents itself. Zeid commented that this is more about being ready for any prospects in the future.
