According to a recent report, Northeastern University has obtained a doubling in its budget for research over an eight-year period. This performance has contrasted with that of Massachusetts General Hospital and other competitors.
As a result, Northeastern University has been able to launch an Interdisciplinary Science & Engineering Complex, which will cost over $200m, as well as expanding its faculty. When the science center is ready to open, the staff could use banner printing in Marlborough.
The university has apparently been able to attract extra financial backing because it has pursued a strategic approach. This has involved looking at the recruitment of experienced researchers.
Mike Armini, who works in external affairs for Northeastern University, has told the Boston Business Journal:
“When those faculty members come, they are able to raise our game in terms of research. The funding should follow.”
However, Northeastern University has not placed all its eggs in one basket. It has pursued funds from a wide range of sources.
As money from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has not flowed in the way which might have been hoped for, the individuals at the university have concentrated on attracting funding from federal sources. About 20% of the resources now comes from NIH.
