The Labor Day Parade will be returning to Marlborough for the 71st year.
The parade route for this year will be somewhat different due to construction in the downtown area. The parade will follow Granger Boulevard which is south of downtown rather than going down Main Street past City Hall and the Walker Building. Residents can be made aware of such a new route with flyer printing and other printing services.
Barbara LaGrenade, Director of Marlborough Community Cupboard, will be the grand marshal for this year’s parade. Mayor Arthur Vigeant said that LaGrenade is committed to fighting food insecurity and has been dedicated to helping families in need with various programs, and that her work is much appreciated. This will also be the last parade for Mayor Vigeant, as his term will end at the end of this year.
The Labor Day Parade in Marlborough began in 1952 when Louis Ghiloni, former parks director, and Romeo Gadbois, former mayor, organized the first parade celebrating the end of summer. That year there were veterans from World War II and 12 marching units. The parade has grown over the years to include a separate festival and fireworks display with a parade route that is close to 1.5 miles long.
The parade will take place on Monday, September 4 beginning at noon.
