A tiny house is currently being built by students from Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School in Marlborough. The house is being constructed inside the school, will be 500 square feet in size, and is completely energy efficient.
The students are not only learning about construction but are also giving back to the community, as it will be given to a Maine veteran. Once it is completed, it will be trucked in one piece to Cherryfield, Maine, and then donated to a formerly homeless veteran with a disability. This joint venture was made possible by a collaboration between the school and The Maine Seacoast Mission.
The work of such partnerships and their altruistic results can be made more visible to the community through poster printing.
Over 125 students who are being guided by 14 teachers are working on the project. May is when construction first started and was picked back up in the fall when school started. The house includes interior design and painting; plumbing, carpentry, and electrical work; and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.
Russell P. Mangsen, Assabet Director of Technical Programs, said that this house will be the first of many more in the future. He added that all the materials for the house were donated by local businesses and the veteran is helping to defray some of the costs.
Veterans Day, November 11, is the scheduled delivery date.
