Marlborough looks to build downtown parking lot

Arthur Vigeant, mayor of Marlborough, is looking to build a parking lot on two empty lots on Bolton Street across the street from the District Education Center.

The lots need to be purchased by the city at a cost of $400,000. Funding for this purchase would come from a transfer from the open space stabilization account of the city. The transfer has been approved by members of the Finance Committee.

The two lots, which have buildings that were recently demolished, are owned by limited liability companies. There would be 35 parking space created on the lots. Banner printing can be used at such a site to keep those in the area informed of such plans.

Vigeant spoke of the benefits of such a purchase as there is the potential to bring more parking to the downtown area. Donald Landers, a City Councilor, added that this parking could encourage the more people using Union Common which is nearby. These additional parking spaces could enable the space to be used for other events and activities, other than the summer concert series, which is held on 10 Thursday nights in July and August, and the tree-lighting ceremony. City Councilor David Doucette also remarked that additional parking is needed for the future development of the heart of the city, which has become a priority of Marlborough officials.
