Mary Murphy, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning of the Marlborough Public Schools, has been selected by the School Committee to be the new superintendent in the district.
Murphy’s career in education began in the Cambridge Public Schools in the 1990s. She started her career in the Marlborough Public Schools as the assistant principal at Francis J. Kane Elementary School in 2003. She then moved on to principal Jaworek Elementary School two years later and was principal from 2011 to 2015 at the Charles Whitcomb School.
Katherine Hennessey, a member of the School Committee, said that she feels strongly that Murphy will be dedicated and committed to each student in the school district. Hennessey added that she feels that that commitment and dedication will also be extended to every member of the staff.
Murphy was one of four finalists, each of whom met with parents, staff, and school committee members and toured the schools in the city over the past two weeks. There were over 24 applicants for the position.
Michael Bergeron, current superintendent of the Marlborough Public Schools, is planning to leave the position this month to take a job in New Hampshire for Tabletop Tycoon, a publisher of tabletop games.
Murphy can start updated her Business Cards to reflect her new role, and will begin her position this Friday, July 1.
