The Commonwealth of Massachusetts recently awarded $3.3m towards the renovation and interior modernization of the Pleasant Street apartments for seniors in Marlborough. The total cost of the project is expected to be $5.5 million.
The remaining costs for the project will be funded by $400,000 approved by the City Council, $100,000 in Community Development reserves, $100,000 from the neighborhood stabilization program, and $720,850 in solar net metering credits. Executive Director of the Housing Authority, Douglas Bushman, commented that these funds were necessary to ensure that the project moved forward.
The apartments, which are close to 60 years old, have 42 units. There will be replacements of bathrooms and kitchens, upgrades to the plumbing, improvements to fire and electrical alarm systems, and new sprinkler systems. Bushman added that many bathtubs will be replaced with walk-in showers, and kitchens will have cabinets that are easier to reach so seniors will be able to remain in their units for years to come.
Designs are expected to be completed by January, with bids going out in the spring, and construction completed by Fall 2020. City officials are meeting with tenants to work out relocation plans during construction.
Banner printing companies can be hired to create displays that can be posted throughout the area so that residents become aware of such renovations and their benefits to tenants.
