Names for the new elementary school and two new sports fields in Marlborough are currently under discussion.
Arthur Vigeant, mayor of Marlborough, has suggested naming the school for three brothers from Marlborough who served during the civil war. The school would be named the Goodnow School while its softball field would be named for a marine from Marlborough who fought in the Vietnam War., Corp. Richard Demers.
Harold Cole, who was in the Naval Reserves during World War II, is being considered for the name of the baseball field behind the Whitcomb School. Both Demers and Cole are buried in Marlborough at the Immaculate Cemetery. Printing services can be used to inform the community of such recommendations.
The new elementary school is expected to cost $56.4m, a savings of $10m from the initial plan as the district enrolled in the Model School program of the Massachusetts School Building Authority and use a design of a model school that has been built in the state.
Once completed, the school will be able to accommodate 610 students in over 30 classrooms and enable those in fifth grade to move back to the elementary school. There will be a dedicated play area for kindergarten students, a separate play area for those in first and second grade, and more space for the cafeteria and gym.
The school is expected to be opened this fall.
