Graduate from Marlborough High School receives Fulbright Grant

Anisha Gundewar, a 2009 graduate from Marlborough High School, will be traveling to India this fall via the Fulbright U.S. Scholarship Program.

Gundewar recently completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Rochester, where she earned a double major in Health, Behavior, and Society and Microbiology.

Although Gundewar received news of the grant in April, she told the Daily News Staff at Marlborough’s WickedLocal that it was only now starting to sink in.

Gundewar will be conducting her research project along with Partners for Urban Knowledge, Action, and Research. The Mumbai based non-profit will assist her as she studies methods through which the current social structures in slum neighborhoods could be a vehicle to carry out initiatives related to public health.

The Fulbright program hands out around 1,900 grants every year. The application process begins about a year before the award is given, and requires students to create their project and do independent work, which Gundewar said she found to be a valuable part of the process. She told WickedLocal that she appreciated how self-driven it was.

While many students would be relaxing over the summer before leaving on such an adventure, Gundewar will be working on an independent project at Rochester’s Strong Children’s Research Center, where she will be examining the treatment of children with asthma. When she returns from her Fulbright trip, she will be entering the medical school program at Rochester; all of which she can list on her business card printing order afterwards.
