Ground has been broken for a major renovation of the Marlborough Public Library. The project is expected to cost $24m.
The renovation will tear down an addition that was built in the 1960s and replace it, which will add 16,000 square feet to the library. The meeting room will be on the lower level of the library and the circulation desk will be at the main entrance next to the parking lot. Additional parking spaces for the expanded library will be made available by the demolition of two houses along Witherbee Street, which the city purchased for this purpose.
During the past spring, materials form the library were moved to Walker Building on Main Street. This will enable the library to be opened five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Banner printing can be used to inform residents of such temporary locations and hours of operation.
Recently, the Friends of the Marlborough Public Library gifted the library an amount of $16,000 for the renovation fund in memory of Ray Johnson, who was a president of the Friends from 1972 until his death in 2017. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees.
The renovations are expected to take about 18 months to finish, with a completion date of sometime in the spring of 2023.
