Moderna, based in Cambridge, is looking to expand in Marlborough.
Moderna and the city are negotiating the potential construction of a new manufacturing facility on Memorial Drive. Such sites often turn to banner printing to inform residents and other in neighboring communities of upcoming projects.
Scott Nickerson, senior vice president of manufacturing, said his company is planning to invest close to $450m, in the facility in Marlborough to handle the anticipated growth of the company.
Nickerson added that Moderna needs to expand its manufacturing of its vaccines and so is evaluating locations in the Marlborough region. He said the expected investment of $350m to $450m will include building core, shell, engineering, and machinery. It will also employ between 200 and 250 people in such positions as manufacturing technicians, maintenance, process management, and engineering.
The facility will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with manufacturing around the clock. Moderna is looking for approval by the city for a tax increment financing (TIF) plan that would allow it to pay taxes at a reduced rate for 20 years, and to employ a specified number of people. A TIF is often used by municipalities to attract businesses that will make investments and attract employees.
It is expected that the facility will be operational by 2026.
