New water treatment plant planned for Foxborough

Plans are being undertaken for a second treatment plant in Foxborough to remove additional chemicals from the drinking water supply of the town.

The new plant will be on Lamson Road off Oak Street, next to four wells that are grouped together. It will be used to remove polyfluoroalkyl substances, which are also known as PFAS and can cause health risks in people and animals. There is an existing facility on Oak Street that was built to filter manganese and iron from tap water. These substances cause system disruptions in certain parts of town.

This potential project is the second of three possible multi-million-dollar facilities that are specifically designed to remove PFAS chemicals. The conservation commission must review this project because the proposed location is a wooded site within a 62-acre town parcel, adjacent to a wetland resource area.

Such sites frequently use banner printing to communicate potential projects and their importance to the community, which they can obtain from local shops.

A project manager from the engineering firm Tighe & Bond, Bryan Weiner, said that paving and grading would be pitched away from the wetlands and that the storage and interception of runoff would be handled by two stormwater basins.

Weiner said that an early October deadline has been set to secure all necessary permits for the project.
