A helmet giveaway was recently held by Mass in Motion at Britland Park in Fall River behind the Police Station.
Grants from the Fall River Police Department, the Kiwanis Club, and the Truesdale Foundation enabled the organization to purchase 140 helmets.
Children between the ages of 5 and 15 were fitted with helmets by volunteers, who also repaired scooters and bicycles that were brought in.
Paul deVillers, one of the volunteers, commented that in addition to repairs, parents do not often notice when their children grow and their bikes need adjusting. Often, bikes need to have the handlebars and seat readjusted to better fit the rider.
DeVillers commented that many children do not wear their helmets properly and they are perched on the top of the head. Julianne Kelly, coordinator of Mass in Motion Fall River, said that they show both the parents and the children how to place a helmet properly on the head, so as to help prevent injury.
One parent attested to the knowledge of the volunteers who could discuss the importance of a well-fitted helmet in a way both parents and children could understand.
Posters have been placed along the nearby Quequechan River Rail Trail to attract the attention of bikers and alert them to the helmet giveaway and bike repair event, which is an example of how this sort of campaign often keeps poster printing companies busy.
