Rail trail gets funds to expand in Fall River

For those who like to walk and bike in the outdoors in Fall River along the Quequechan River Rail Trail, there is good news.

A path that is in the shadow of Interstate 195 and runs through the heart of city, the Quequechan River Rail Trail, is currently under construction so that by the spring, the trail will be almost three times longer than its current length.

According to Byron Holmes of the Engineering Department in the City of Fall River, a few months ago, old bridges were rotting and falling in the water, and walking along the trail was therefore very dangerous. However, more land has been acquired by the City and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has issued permits, so that the river can be opened again and the trail can be expanded.

As part of the construction work, Travassos Park was renovated at a cost of $2m. Two new phases are planned for completion in the spring, with a fourth phase in the planning stages that will connect the park with Britland Park. This will be completed in the spring of 2017.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has given the City nearly $7.5m for the entire project. The City may be working with a Print company to Print Flyers that can be distributed throughout the community about the project and its benefits once it opens in the spring.
